Jurgen Klopp reveals why he knew Liverpool would beat Newcastle

Jurgen Klopp claimed he knew Liverpool would keep their title dream alive at Newcastle because “It's destiny.”

Super-sub Divock Origi sent Liverpool back to the top of the table above rivals Manchester City with a controversial 86th minute header after referee Andre Marriner had awarded a dubious free kick taken by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Beamed Klopp: “I was calm because I thought it's destiny, the boys try everything and you just have to try it, we were aggressive, we tried to push.

"It's brilliant, so deserved, it was a tough game against a physically stronger team than us. We had to fight, I couldn't be more proud.

“Divock's goal was so crucial. What can I say it is just brilliant. It is like fairytale.

“You can say whatever you want about me – that I don’t play Divock or Shaq enough and then I make this decision – it’s great. That they do it. I love it. It was really a big moment.”

Liverpool twice had the lead with Virgil Van Dijk opening the scoring after 13 minutes and Mo Salah scoring his 22nd of the season after 28 minutes.

In between Christian Atsu pulled a goal back before Saloman's goal set up a grandstand finish.

But victory came at a price with Salah stretchered off after 76 minutes after colliding with Newcastle keeper Martin Dubrvka.

The Egyptian striker has now joined Roberto Firmino as a major doubt for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Added Klopp: “ Mo got the hip of the goalie on his head and was on the ground and the doctor had to make a decision, on the pitch or off the pitch and the decision was off.

“We accept that but when he came in he was sitting in dressing room he was watching the game. He was then fine but we have to wait. He got a proper knock.”

Geordie boss Rafa Benitez was delighted with the effort of his stars saying: “I’m really proud of this group of players because I think to stay up was a good achievement.

“And to play today against one of the best teams in the Europe, and to do it in the way we did, from the beginning until the end, is something that every Newcastle United fan has to pleased and happy about.”
