Jurgen Klopp reveals how Liverpool helped Mohamed Salah overcome his barren spell

Jurgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah's quality has never been in doubt after the forward ended his goal drought by smashing another Liverpool record.

Salah became the quickest to 50 Premier League goals for the club by netting a remarkable strike in the 3-1 win at Southampton on Friday night.

The Egyptian reached the landmark in 69 games, beating the previous best figure of 72 set by Fernando Torres.

His goal, which saw him run a full 40 yards before firing home off the post, also ended an eight-match barren run.

And Klopp said: “It was never in doubt about being a great player from my side. It was goal number 50 for Liverpool - that’s an incredible number.

“As a striker you have chances, each striker is a human being as well, maybe you have better moments and less good moments.

“But he is pretty consistent, his physical things are always there, but it’s normal. He stayed always calm to deal with the situations around us.

“If it’s a big thing we don’t really care about it but it’s a nice moment for his first goal for a while, a really good moment.”

Klopp also had praise Roberto Firmino for his contribution in the win that moved Liverpool back to the Premier League summit on 82 points, two ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand.

“Super goal from Mo, super run, Bobby is so important to make the run - he (almost) didn’t play because the ankle was not good - fantastic finish," he said.

“Then Bobby again chasing pretty much the whole world and makes a one-v-one situation, super pass, 3-1 (by Jordan Henderson).”

Klopp, meanwhile, has explained the decision to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold for James Milner shortly before the hour.

“The boy played how many games for Liverpool and 98% of these games were brilliant but tonight it was obviously not one of these nights,” said the Reds boss.

“No problem but we have an option with Milly and that’s why we did it, it was the same for Gini (who was replaced by Henderson).

“If you have an option, you have to use it. The boys give their everything, 100%, and Trent we need him so much. He decided games and whatever, so now the boy can get some treatment and he can go again.”
