Jurgen Klopp repeats Man City claim after Liverpool close gap at top of Premier League table

Jurgen Klopp is adamant Liverpool are continuing to ignore Manchester City after they closed the gap at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds are now just three points off the summit having romped to a 6-0 home win over relegation-threatened Leeds United on Wednesday evening.

Mohamed Salah scored two first-half penalties, Sadio Mane bagged a second-half brace and centre-backs Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk both netted as Liverpool recorded their biggest-ever win over the Yorkshire side.

Klopp’s men, who have won their last six Premier League games, were 12 points behind City barely two weeks ago but now have a superior goal difference.

The gap could open again at the weekend with the Reds in Carabao Cup final action as Pep Guardiola’s side travel to Everton.

And Klopp has insisted Liverpool are concerned only in their own results after breathing new life into the title race.

“We don’t chase City,” said the Reds boss. “We try to win our football games.

"The thing is now we have the cup final at the weekend and City play I don’t know exactly who but they might probably win and it’s six points again before we play the next Premier League game.

“I’m not sure we play the next game before or after them, so it might be nine points all of a sudden.

“So we don’t have to count these things. We just have to win our football games.”

Klopp added: “Do we do that on the front foot? Yes. But as much as I love the goals we scored tonight, I love the clean sheet.

“Everything we do is based on a top, organised defensive performance. Without that we are just a good football team. With that we can be a successful football team.

“I like the determination we showed again for defending, the commitment of the boys.

“It’s an interesting period of the season, definitely. We play the final, then FA Cup and then West Ham.

“Oh my God, nobody should count the points before we play them because we lost the game against them last time. We have to clarify something.

“It’s not for 10 days and so many things can happen before then. We just have to stay really focused and go for it with all we have.”
