Jurgen Klopp reflects on being "heavily drunk" during Dortmund title celebrations

Jurgen Klopp says he was "heavily drunk" when he celebrated Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga title win in 2011, adding that it taught him not to drink too much when toasting big victories.

Klopp picked up the league title with Dortmund in both 2011 and 2012, before going on to reach the Champions League final the following year.

He now stands on the verge of guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title when football can resume in the coming weeks, and although coronavirus restrictions seem certain to restrict any open top bus celebrations on Merseyside, Klopp would doubtless have learned from past experiences when it came to celebrations.

“The way we celebrated was very original. It was like becoming a champion in the A-Class Northwest (a minor league)," Klopp told Dortmund's Twitter account on the anniversary of the 2011 title win.

"It was a really great celebration with all the zipping and zapping. There would be no such thing today.

"I was heavily drunk in 2011, but in 2012, after the double, I didn't really notice [the celebrations]. You can see what alcohol does to people.

"Do not drink, otherwise, you will lose the memory of important moments in your life."

Footage of Klopp enjoying himself at Liverpool's parade after winning the Champions League last year was widely circulated online at the time, with some suggestions that he was a little tipsy.

But the German denied it, adding that goalkeeper Alisson Becker drank all his beers.

“By the way, people thought I was drunk on the bus,” he told reporters.

“But I was not, I had only had two beers. I just looked drunk – all the beers I should have had, Ali had!”
