Jurgen Klopp reacts to Rangers vs Liverpool Battle of Britain clash with 'proper challenge' remark

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits he is looking forward to the 'proper challenge' of facing Rangers in the Champions League.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst guided his team to the lucrative group stages after successfully navigating two rounds of qualifying. The Light Blues disposed of Belgian outfit Union Saint Gilloise 3-2 on aggregate - losing 2-0 on the road before a 3-0 win at Ibrox.

Dutch giants PSV were next up and after a 2-2 draw in Govan, the Dutchman and his troops pulled off a stunning 1-0 result at the Philips Stadion to qualify for the next stage.

Rangers fans can now look forward to a Battle of Britain clash while a reunion with Calvin Bassey - the big money transfer out of Ibrox this summer - and his Ajax side with Serie A outfit Napoli also in the mix.

Reds boss Klopp is well aware of the Europa League run last term and Rangers' story over the past few seasons while there are some familiar faces in Van Bronckhorst's ranks in the shape of Ryan Kent and Ben Davies. He believes the section will be very, very competitive and also tense at the same time.

Reacting to the draw, Klopp said: "Rangers are a new opponent for us but we know them, too. Their story over the last few years has been really interesting and they did really, really well to qualify for the group stage, given the teams they were up against in the qualifying matches.

"We also know a couple of their players well. Ryan Kent has had a great development since moving to Scotland and Ben Davies is just starting out on his journey with Rangers, so it will be good to come up against them.

"The only certainty right now is that all of the six games will be incredibly competitive and really intense. I’m excited about it. It is a proper football group and, like I said, a proper challenge."
