Jurgen Klopp provides Sadio Mane injury update after concerns raised in Ajax win

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said Sadio Mane will not join the growing number of Reds stars sidelined by injury, after the forward was spotted with ice strapped on his leg after he was substituted against Ajax.

Mane was central to Liverpool's 1-0 win over the Dutch side in their opening Champions League game, with his miskick wrong-footing Nicolas Tagliafico who scored an own goal.

The Senegal international was replaced by Diogo Jota on the hour mark and was immediately given ice for his leg, prompting fears he could join the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker on the sidelines.

However, Klopp insists it is "not a problem" for Mane.

"Sadio has still for a few days had a dead leg," Klopp said. "He deals with it in that area, that’s the only thing.

"It is still painful but it’s not a problem. When he doesn’t play, he puts ice on it. That’s it."

Mane was not the only member of Liverpool's front three to be taken off, with Klopp making the most of the Champions League's decision to allow five substitutes to be made in a game.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were also replaced after 60 minutes, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Takumi Minamino joining Jota in attack.

Explaining his decision to replace all three attackers at the same time, Klopp added: " The game became pretty wild, we had to defend really altogether and we defend in a 4-5-1 which means both wingers have to be really involved in defending.

"And then in the moment there were incredibly big spaces for the counter attack. And we thought it’d make sense to bring their fresh legs because all three who came on are in really good shape, fresh, in a tricky, difficult game on a difficult pitch.

"That helps a lot. And you saw, they all really helped a lot. Takumi, in both directions, incredible between the lines, and Diogo is a machine, he can punish opponents in a one-on-one situation.

"We had these moments but we didn’t finish it off unfortunately but it’s completely fine."
