Jurgen Klopp prepares Liverpool to face Atletico Madrid side he "doesn't understand"

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side will take on an Atletico Madrid team he "doesn't understand" following their meeting in March 2020.

The Reds, then defending European champions, lost to the Spanish side in the last 16, shortly before the pandemic curtailed football for months.

Atletico won the first-leg 1-0 in Madrid but then were on the receiving end of an onslaught at Anfield.

Liverpool levelled the tie after 90 minutes and then went 2-0 up in extra-time before Diego Simeone's side scored three times in the space of 25 minutes.

Klopp watched his side dominate, enjoying 72 per cent of possession and having a staggering 34 shots on goal.

It wasn't enough though and an Atletico side, renowned for their defensive style under their Argentine manager, progressed.

Speaking after the defeat Klopp, whilst accepting Liverpool's exit, clearly struggled to comprehend why a side bursting with attacking talent chose to play in the manner they did.

"I am completely happy with the performance. It’s so difficult to play a side like this," he said 19 months ago.

"I don’t understand with the quality they have that they play this kind of football. I don’t understand that. But the winner is always right.

"When I see players like (Marcos) Llorente, Koke, Saul… they could play proper football but they stand deep in their own half and have counter-attacks.

"But they beat us so we accept that and congratulate them."

Those comments have been put to Simeone as the two teams prepare to square off in the Spanish capital - but he gave a blunt response, claiming he had "nothing" to say.

Atletico have won five of their eight LaLiga games this term, scoring 11 times in the process.

Liverpool head to the Wanda Metropolitano having stuck five past Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Reds have beaten both AC Milan and Porto in their two European games thus far, scoring eight times.

Atletico sit second on four points but could leapfrog Klopp's team with a win, although they haven't played for over a fortnight.

Liverpool will welcome Alisson and Fabinho back into the fold after the pair fly straight to Spain from Brazil following their international commitments.

Klopp said on the plans: “They will go directly to Madrid, wait there for us, be able to play hopefully then against Atletico, will come slightly later back than us, 10 days over then.

“And then they can come back and are in our normal procedure again, and that’s it.”
