Jurgen Klopp opens up on Liverpool’s failed bid to sign Kylian Mbappe

  • Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp disclosed details of the club's unsuccessful attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco in the summer of 2017.
  • Klopp characterised the effort as Liverpool's “most expensive non-transfer” when speaking to Magenta TV at the World Cup, underscoring the substantial resources invested in the failed acquisition.
  • A Liverpool delegation, spearheaded by Klopp, travelled from Blackpool to Nice to meet Mbappe's family on a private jet in a covert operation to entice the then 18-year-old to Anfield.
  • Despite the elaborate measures, which included flying in circles to evade detection and engaging in discussions with the family, the transfer ultimately did not materialise.
  • Mbappe subsequently moved to Paris Saint-Germain on loan before completing a permanent £153 million transfer, eventually departing for Real Madrid seven years later as PSG's record goalscorer.
