Jurgen Klopp offers ‘really promising’ Virgil van Dijk injury update

Jurgen Klopp insists Virgil van Dijk “looks really good” as the Liverpool centre-back bids to recover from a serious knee injury this year.

The Dutch defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton earlier this season, likely ruling him out for the remainder of the current campaign.

But Van Dijk created excitement among the Reds’ fanbase by sharing a video of himself juggling a ball, while also performing an intense session on the bike.

The champions have so far resisted putting a timescale on his return, but Klopp has provided a promising update on his rehabilitation.

“I don’t know what is possible, and I don’t think I am the right person to judge it,” Klopp said.

“He looks really good. I spoke to him this morning on the phone, and he is in a really good mood. It’s all very promising, but I don’t know when he will be back.

“For sure there are still a lot of stages to go and to clear. I had this injury myself, so I know.

“But for the time we are in, and for how long he is out now, and the rehabilitation, he looks really, really promising.”

While Van Dijk will still be out for some time, Klopp will likely have Joel Matip back for the home game against Burnley on Thursday night.

Klopp is looking for his side to score for the first time after three consecutive Premier League games without a goal.

A win will narrow the gap to leaders Manchester United to just three points and close to within a point of Manchester City and Leicester.
