Jurgen Klopp offers Liverpool FC injury updates on Van Dijk, Matip and Henderson

Liverpool will welcome back influential pair Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson to face Manchester City in the Premier League but are without three players including defender Joel Matip at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed the status of his squad ahead of the top-of-the-table clash with City after Van Dijk missed training this week and Henderson was absent for Liverpool's Champions League win over Genk on Tuesday.

However, there are no injury concerns around Van Dijk as he was simply back in the Netherlands for a royal event recognising Dutch people in various sectors who were 'distinguished by a special achievement'.

Henderson, meanwhile, has recovered from illness to be available for the visit of City. However, Joel Matip remains out along with Xherdan Shaqiri and Nathaniel Clyne.

“Virg was for other reasons not here but he is completely fine,” Klopp explained on Friday.

“Jordan is completely fine. Joel is still out, like Shaq (Xherdan Shaqiri) and like Clyney (Nathaniel Clyne). That's it.”

Matip's absence means Dejan Lovren is likely to partner Van Dijk in defence, with Joe Gomez in competition for the second central defensive spot.

Liverpool should also welcome back Fabinho to the starting XI after the midfielder was dropped to the bench in the dramatic win at Aston Villa last weekend to avoid picking up a fifth booking of the season that would have seen him suspended for the City clash.

Possible Liverpool FC squad to face Man City: Alisson, Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Lovren, Robertson, Fabinho, Keita, Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Mane, Salah, Firmino, Origi.
