Jurgen Klopp "not surprised" if Liverpool's trophy critics are proved right in 20 years

Jurgen Klopp has warned his high-flying side that only trophies will confirm their status as one of the Anfield greats.

Liverpool travel to Wembley this weekend for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, in what they hope will be the first leg of a potential quadruple as they fight for honours on four fronts this season.

And Klopp knows that despite the supreme quality his team has shown in recent seasons, there is only one currency that defines how sides will be remembered… silverware.

"This team, we all know that in the moment the people are really happy," he explained.

"But in 20 years if you want to talk about this team, I would not be surprised - if we don’t win anything any more - people will say: ‘yeah they were good, but they should have won more’.

"That’s why we should try now to win a few things. And the next chance, the best chance we have this weekend, is against Chelsea when it’s really tricky."

Klopp knows the task against Champions League winners Chelsea is no given after drawing twice with the London club this season, and struggling at times in both games.

But he believes this team, with its array of stars and supreme character to match, deserves to have their moment of glory at the ‘home of football’.

Asked if it was unthinkable that Liverpool wouldn’t have its day at Wembley, he said: "I understand 100 per cent. We will try with everything to have this Wembley moment.

"We cannot do more. The boys deserve pretty much everything.

"But how can we say Chelsea don’t deserve it? It depends on the game we play. You have to deserve it in the game.

"We can’t sit here and talk about it like it’s already ours, Chelsea has exactly the same chance.

"They are desperate to put another in the trophy room."

Klopp will wait on the fitness of Diogo Jota for the final, with the forward undergoing several individual sessions this week following injury. He is expected to train with the team on Saturday, and could be on the bench.
