Jurgen Klopp may repeat Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain trick as transfer deadline edges closer for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has so far remained true to his word.

Liverpool were five days removed from having lifted their first title in 30 years when the agenda shifted.

The transfer window had been open for a matter of hours and the questions turned to just how Klopp and his club would approach it.

With over two months of negotiating time ahead of sporting director Michael Edwards, the Reds boss made it known that waiting game was underway.

With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to bite and the uncertainty around club finances lingering, Liverpool would be in no rush to dive head first into the market.

Instead, Klopp asked for patience.

"As long as we don’t know exactly about things, we have to wait," Klopp insisted.

"We have a really good squad, we have see what we can do, we have to see what have to do, we need still more time.

"Time will hopefully bring a bit more clarity about the future and then we will make our decisions."

Nearly two months on from those words, Liverpool's squad remains largely the same.

The £11.75million arrival of Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos was largely paid for by the £10.9m exit of Dejan Lovren. Names continue to be linked, but the Reds are biding their time.

It's unlike Klopp's Liverpool to begin a new Premier League season with issues still hanging over the squad, but that is where they find themselves at present in this unique point of football history.

Calls for the signing of a fourth-choice centre-back go on while the daily 'updates' of Thiago Alcantara's situation remain frequent.

The Reds were said to be waiting until after the Champions League final on August 23 to open official talks with Bayern Munich.

Nearly a month on, Thiago is back training with Bayern and Liverpool have not picked up the phone to officials in Bavaria.

With just under three weeks until the window closes, the Reds do not have to move right this minute, but that October 5 deadline is beginning to appear on the horizon.

Klopp has not made a habit of leaving it late in the window, but there is one high-profile incoming that bucked the trend and could offer clues to the future.

There was less than 48 hours left of the transfer window in August 2017 when the Reds reached an agreement with Arsenal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

It was August 30 when negotiations with the Gunners were swiftly completed after the Reds had agreed to match Chelsea’s £35m offer.

Arsenal had told Liverpool earlier that summer that Oxlade-Chamberlain was not for sale, but were forced into a late change of heart after he snubbed their contract offer worth £180,000 per week.

A medical at St George's Park was booked in for the following day and he completed a big-money move with hours to spare on deadline day over three years ago.

The deal was proof of how the landscape of a particular situation can change quickly while also offering hope for anyone thinking a late dip in the market may still arrive.

Jurgen Klopp has so far proven a man of his word this window, but that waiting game may be nearing its end as we creep closer to October 5.
