Jurgen Klopp makes Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi admission and hails 'fairytale' Liverpool victory

Jurgen Klopp hailed the heart and desire of his Liverpool side after Divock Origi's “fairytale” winner kept their Premier League title dream alive.

Substitute Origi struck with four minutes of normal time remaining to earn a dramatic 3-2 triumph at Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Liverpool are once again two points clear of Manchester City having moved on to 94 points going into next Sunday's final game at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Reds were twice pegged back by Newcastle, with Virgil van Dijk's opener equalised by Christian Atsu before Mohamed Salah's goal was levelled by Salomon Rondon.

And asked if the character shown by his players was incredible, Klopp said: “Absolutely.

“There is a lot to talk about, we could talk about football, but we can also talk purely about showing real heart, showing real passion and desire. That's just brilliant.

“Newcastle gave us a proper game, unbelievable. In our situation, some people probably expected us to show a bit of nerves but the boys didn't, it was just a difficult game for different reasons.

“I liked the reaction of the boys, I didn’t see any major concerns apart from that we concede a goal which is not cool.

“Of course, playing three days ago, the most intense running-wise with the highest number of kilometres in Barcelona, then coming to Newcastle and this is the opposite of a friendly game.

“I loved how calm the boys were. The calmness is always interrupted by a long ball to Rondon and then it’s chaos, the ball coming down and you have to collect it or not.

“I really think the win was deserved. The boys showed in each second what they had to do, and they did it.”

Origi had been introduced on 73 minutes for Salah, who departed on a stretcher with a head injury after a nasty collision with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The Belgian had scored a dramatic injury-time winner in the Anfield derby against Everton in December, and was in the right place to head in a free-kick from fellow substitute Xherdan Shaqiri .

And Klopp said: “What can I say? It’s just brilliant. It’s like a fairytale.

“You can say whatever you want about me, that I don’t play them often enough, and I make this decision and it’s great that they just do it. I love it. That was really a big moment.”

Salah's lengthy on-field treatment meant referee Andrew Marriner added eight minutes of injury time.

And of the late drama, Klopp said: “It didn't feel like it was over. I would have been happy with it being 2-2 and eight minutes of injury time, but with being 3-2 up it was the other way around!

“We had a lot of time to play and a lot of time to defend.

“I accepted long ago that we do everything, absolutely everything. The boys throw whatever they have on the pitch.

“That means, if we are champions or not, it will be destiny. We cannot do more than 97 points, not really. Even when we have had draws, they have tried everything."
