Jurgen Klopp makes Xherdan Shaqiri admission and addresses lack of Liverpool playing time

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted Xherdan Shaqiri has felt frustrated by his lack of playing time this season.

But the Reds' manager has also recognised the important role played by the Switzerland international.

Shaqiri signed from a relegated Stoke City last summer for around £13million in a move which surprised many.

Since then the 27-year-old midfielder has featured 30 times in all competitions.

Most notably the playmaker scored an important Anfield brace as Liverpool defeated Manchester United in the Premier League in December.

Shaqiri also whipped in the set-piece to set up Divock Origi's late winner against Newcastle.

But arguably his most important contribution of his Liverpool career so far came during the Reds' stunning Champions League triumph over Barcelona.

The former Bayern Munich man provided a pinpoint assist as Gini Wijnaldum completed a quickfire brace which launched Klopp's side into the Madrid final.

In an interview with Viasport Football Klopp was shown pictures of his players when they were younger and had to guess their identities.

When the German coach was presented with a photograph of Shaqiri as a youngster he guessed: "I think he's from Switzerland. That must be Shaq (Shaqiri).

"What a wonderful player and wonderful ambassador for his country.

"So I am really happy to have him around. I know people think I didn't play him often enough.

"He probably thinks the same. But what an important player for us all season."

The No. 23 will travel with the team to Spain later this week as the Reds battle it out with Tottenham for the European title.
