Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said there was "no chance" Thiago could have started today and explained the defensive absentees ahead of the Chelsea clash.
Fabinho begins at centre-back with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both missing from the squad.
Thiago, however, is on the bench and could be in line to make his debut.
Explaining the situation at the back, Klopp said: "Joe [Gomez] is not a real concern. It's probably only today. Same with Billy [Koumetio].
"With Joel [Matip] we have to see. It could take a few days longer.
"It's muscle - that's how it is. He looked perfect in pre-season.
"Now we've got a little problem and we have to react."
Klopp indicated a start for new boy Thiago was never on the agenda today, despite him being in the squad.
The boss added: "I didn't think a second about starting him today.
"It's really funny that people could consider that.
"Bayern and Liverpool, [the way] we play - there might be similar parts.
"But for sure he played a different position. Whatever he plays for us it's different.
"So there's no chance!"
