Jurgen Klopp makes Super Cup admission but believes Liverpool can help change his view

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he hasn't always had a love affair with the UEFA Super Cup, but believes his Liverpool side can help him change that tonight.

Klopp has missed out on contesting the European curtain raiser on three occasions after being beaten in the Champions League final twice and picking up a runners-up medal in the 2016 Europa League.

Klopp lost the 2013 Champions League final when his Borussia Dortmund side were beaten by domestic rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley before the Reds slipped to a 3-1 reverse to Sevilla in the Europa League three years later.

The 2018 Champions League final ended in disappointment too when Real Madrid won 3-1 in Kiev before Liverpool secured their sixth European crown with victory against Tottenham in Madrid in June.

The Liverpool manager said those defeats have kept him away from watching the Super Cup over the years, but ahead of his side's meeting with Chelsea on Wednesday, the German has talked up the magnitude of the fixture.

He said: "How significant is it for us? It's an interesting question. First of all you think: 'wow! four-and-a-half-hour flight!' Having Istanbul around the corner would be nicer, but apart from that, it is a big one.

"The Super Cup itself, in my history, is not a cup that I have loved to watch in the past because I was often in the final of either the Europa League or the Champions League.

"If you are not in that game, it means you have not won the final. That's completely different this year, so we are really looking forward to it.

"It's a big one and it is a wonderful city, obviously. Again, two English teams against each other which is another sign of the Premier League's quality."
