Jurgen Klopp makes Liverpool declaration over Virgil van Dijk injury

Jurgen Klopp is confident Liverpool will deal with the absence of Virgil van Dijk as they begin life without their talismanic Dutchman.

Van Dijk is likely to be out for the season as he prepares to undergo surgery to repair a damaged anterior cruciate ligament sustained after a horror challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on Saturday.

With Joel Matip also sidelined, Liverpool will field a makeshift centre-back pairing of Joe Gomez and Fabinho for tonight's Champions League group opener against Ajax in Holland.

And while admitting every team would miss Van Dijk, Klopp has faith in his squad to deal with the situation.

"Virgil is our boy, our man, our friend, the boys' brother, my son, whatever you want," the Reds boss said to BT Sport.

"He is injured. Yes, that feels massive, 100%.

"The sports part of it, as always in professional football you have to deal with it and we will deal with it.

"We will miss him, of course. Everybody would miss him. But that's the part we deal with.

"What we all felt really hard is that we felt for him."
