Jurgen Klopp speaks out on Champions League redraw and Liverpool opponents Inter Milan

Jurgen Klopp agreed with the decision to redo the Champions League draw and believes his Liverpool side are in for a proper tie when they take on Inter Milan in the last-16.

The Reds were initially paired with Red Bull Salzburg in the first draw on Monday morning that took place at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon.

However, a technical error meant the original draw was voided after Manchester United's ball was not in the pot as one of the teams to potentially play Atletico Madrid, with United also being drawn against Villareal, a team who they could not face.

This led to concerns over the validity of the draw, and questions were raised directly by Atletico in a statement released on their Twitter account.

And shortly after that statement, UEFA confirmed that the draw would be done again and the first one conducted would be voided.

But despite some clubs supposedly being angered by the decision, Klopp believes UEFA made the right call to do it again.

He said: “Definitely. I saw it live and I thought, ‘You cannot let it stand like this, there’s no chance.’ Definitely, they had to do it again.”

Liverpool only played at the San Siro last week as they came from behind to beat AC Milan in their final group game.

And even though Klopp acknowledges that his side are in for a tough tie, he is relishing the prospect of taking on Simone Inzaghi’s side.

He said: “I had to wait 54 years to play at the San Siro for the first time… and now it’ll be twice in three months, so that’s good news!

“All good. Of course, it is a tough draw, definitely. They are the league leaders in Italy; a good team in a good moment. We will see how things go until we meet in February.”

And Klopp also believes his side will be coming up against one of the most exciting strikers in the world in the shape of Lautaro Martinez.

“Yes, obviously Sanchez and Dzeko we know well – and Lautaro Martinez is one of the most exciting strikers in the world, probably,” he told liverpoolfc.com.

“Simone Inzaghi is there, his first year, last year they were champions, but it is the Liverpool way – it’s never easy, but still possible, so let’s give it a go.

“It’s a proper Champions League tie, so all good and I am absolutely looking forward to it.”

The first game between the two sides will be played at the San Siro in February before the return leg is scheduled to take place at Anfield at the start of the following month.
