Jurgen Klopp makes blunt Anfield admission after Liverpool lose to Real Madrid

Jurgen Klopp admits the absence of supporters will make it difficult for Liverpool to complete another famous European comeback at Anfield.

The Reds will have to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit next Wednesday after falling to defeat at Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final tie at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

Liverpool memorably came from 3-0 down against Barcelona in the semi-final two seasons ago by securing a 4-0 home triumph en route to lifting the trophy for a sixth time.

However, Klopp’s side have struggled at Anfield with fans still banished due to the coronavirus pandemic, losing their last six games at the stadium.

And when asked about the prospect of another fightback, the Reds boss said: “Of course, it is completely different.

“If you want to have some emotional memories, you watch the Barcelona game back and 80% of this game was the atmosphere in the stadium, I would say. We have to do without that.

“It’s not that I sit here and think comebacks are our thing and that we do that all the time.

“We have from time to time, but we always had supporters in the stadium. We don’t have that this time.

“I don’t know if we can do it, but I can promise we will give it a proper try.”

Klopp added: “The boys really want it. Today in the first half we couldn’t and for whatever reason we didn’t, and that’s what we will look to find out, to change, and to go again.

“It must be a really tricky task for Real Madrid at Anfield, with or without supporters.

"Tonight was really strange, it was a difficult and different situation because of the stadium.

"Anfield is at least a proper stadium and that will be good for us.”
