Jurgen Klopp makes admission on Liverpool centre-back situation and January transfers

Jurgen Klopp has not ruled out the possibility of Liverpool signing a centre-back in the January transfer window.

The Reds boss explained that if "things were more normal" and the world was not battling against a devastating pandemic then he would have already entered the market to sign a centre-half due to the crippling injury situation at Anfield.

Liverpool are facing life without any recognised senior centre-backs, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both in the rehabilitation stage of their long-term fight to return to fitness while Joel Matip is also struggling again.

Against Southampton, centre-midfield pairing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho played in the heart of defence while starlet Rhys Williams and young defender Nat Phillips have also filled in that position so far this term.

There have been strong calls for sporting director Michael Edwards to deploy his talents in the market and bring in a versatile centre-back, in turn helping Klopp bring the likes of Fabinho back into his favoured midfield role and asserting more dominance higher up the pitch.

"I cannot say definitely we won't bring any in," Klopp said when asked if he would be entering the market for a centre-back this month.

"But it's just not likely because of the situation in the world.

"We should not forget the situation is tough one for all people and for football clubs as well, there might be football clubs with no financial problems but this club always was and always will be - with these owners - very responsible with things we do.

"If the world was in a normal place and everything was fine, we had won the league and recently won the Champions League and the club was in the best possible situation and then you have three senior centre-halves plus Fabinho and kids but the three senior centre-halves get injured, is that a situation you'd usually do something?

"Yes, definitely. But we are not in that situation.

"I don't know if something will happen or not.

"We maybe could do something, but it would be a short term solution and we don't want that as it doesn't help really, so we have to deal with the situation as we have so far and we have to get through this.

"It's not the best moment for the planet, so why should it be for football clubs?"
