What Jurgen Klopp shouted on touchline sums up Liverpool defeat to Southampton

Liverpool suffered an evening of frustration as they slumped to defeat at Southampton on Monday night.

A second-minute goal from Danny Ings was enough to consign the Reds to their second Premier League defeat of the season in a 1-0 reverse.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side can now be leapfrogged at the top of the table by Manchester United before the sides meet later this month.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at St Mary's.

Klopp can't understand

Jurgen Klopp had plenty of reason to be less than impressed as his team struggled to reach anything like their best.

And his frustration boiled over in one first-half incident when Andy Robertson lost the ball and then committed a needless foul that led to a booking from lamentable referee Andre Marriner.

"Why would you do that?" came the befuddled cry from Klopp.

To be fair, it wasn't the only time the Reds boss was asking the same question.

Trent has headache

Trent Alexander-Arnold will almost certainly admit he has had better games.

From booting the ball out of play in the first second, erring for the only goal and giving possession away a record amount of times for a Premier League player in a match this season, the right-back suffered a bit of a nightmare.

And all the way through he had Jordan Henderson, playing as the right-sided centre-back, growing increasingly exasperated while trying to maintain encouragement.

By the time he was replaced on 78 minutes, Alexander-Arnold probably had a headache in every sense.

Marriner ignores Henderson

Alexander-Arnold wasn't the only one to get a mouthful or two from the Liverpool skipper.

Henderson was among many from the visiting party driven to distraction by the inconsistent performance of whistle-blower Marriner.

At one point he repeatedly shouted the referee's name in an attempt to gain his attention.

Needless to say, the official missed it - or decided ignorance was bliss. For him, at least.

Ings keeps cool

Danny Ings will forever be a lost player at Liverpool, an Anfield career ruined by unfortunate injury.

Certainly, Klopp was a huge admirer and the striker was a popular member of the squad.

Which goes some way towards explaining why the ex-Red didn't go overboard with his celebrations after scoring against his old club for the second successive season in this fixture.

Not that anyone would have blamed him, such was his impressive finish.
