Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool's Premier League squad two men short after summer transfers

Liverpool have only included 23 'senior' players in their Premier League squad list for this season following a summer of change at Anfield.

The Reds saw the likes of Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino all leave in the summer, with Mane in particular playing a key role in the club's recent successes under Jurgen Klopp.

Origi gained a reputation as a cult hero amongst fans for his memorable goals both in Merseyside derbies and in the latter stages of the Champions League in 2019, while Minamino was the Reds' top scorer across the two domestic cup competitions they won last season.

The trio left for Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Monaco respectively, and while potential club record signing Darwin Nunez was the biggest name attacking addition, the fact that he is just 23 showcases just how much younger Klopp's group of players has become.

That is reflected on their final Premier League squad list, which was published by the division alongside the squads of the other 19 clubs in the division on Wednesday.

Premier League rules allow for clubs to name up to 25 players in their senior squad list, with as many as eight required to be 'homegrown' players.

A homegrown player does not have to be born in the UK, but does have to have been registered with a club in England or Wales for either three seasons or 36 months before they turn 21.

Liverpool have named just seven homegrown players in their squad, with the same seven as last year - Caoimhin Kellher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Nat Phillips, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - making the cut.

Nunez and Brazilian midfielder Arthur are the only new additions to the 'senior' player list, because fellow summer signings Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho are young enough to be included in the group of under-21 players.

Clubs are allowed to name as many players as they want, of any nationality, on that secondary list, with the only stipulation being that they are born on or after January 1, 2001.

Carvalho, who has impressed since his summer arrival from Fulham, scoring a crucial last minute winner in the 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle is one of a number of exciting young players on Liverpool's under-21 list, where he joins the likes of Ramsey, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones.

Spanish teenager Stefan Bajcetic is another player on the list, with the defensive midfielder, at 17 years 10 months and 22 days, having become Liverpool's youngest ever player to feature in the Champions League when he came on in the closing stages of Tuesday's 2-1 win over Ajax.
