Jurgen Klopp keen for new Premier League protocol to continue in 2020-21 season

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hopes that drinks breaks are a feature of Premier League games in future seasons.

One break has been taken in each half during every game since the league resumed under Project Restart protocols last month.

Players have drunk from their own bottles as top-flight bosses aim to ensure they stay hydrated as matches continue deep into the summer heat.

The minute-long breaks have also allowed managers to gather their players and distribute tactical instructions in a manner similar to sports where there are timeouts.

Though drinks breaks are not planned to be part of the regulations for games next season, Klopp hopes they are introduced on a permanent basis.

"A timeout, I wished for 20 years, no-one has listened," the German said after Liverpool's 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

"Drinks break I like a lot. People think you only need one when it's hot then you don't need one often in England but it's important to have one. I really like the opportunity to talk.

"It takes 30 seconds pretty much. It's a chance to give the players some information and I like it."

After Villa frustrated them in the first half, the second-half drinks break proved vital for the Reds as they earned three points over their Anfield visitors.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the 71st minute, latching onto Naby Keita's pass only minutes after the break was called for by referee Paul Tierney.

19-year-old midfielder Curtis Jones then secured the victory late on as he fired home from Mohamed Salah's cushioned header in the 89th minute.

Liverpool's victory leaves them 12 points away from breaking the record points total set by Manchester City in the 2017-18 season.

With five games remaining, four wins will be enough for Klopp's men to better the 100 points Pep Guardiola's City collected two seasons ago.
