Jurgen Klopp instructed to re-sign transfer target Philippe Coutinho for key reason

Jurgen Klopp should re-sign former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho because he can make the difference in the title race.

That's the opinion of ex-Reds star Steve Nicol, who reckons the Anfield club need to add another goalscorer to their ranks.

Coutinho was Liverpool's best player when he left in a £142million transfer to Barcelona back in January 2018.

The Reds used the money from the sale to sign Virgin van Dijk and Alisson, and subsequently won the Champions League.

But Liverpool did miss out on winning a first Premier League title, and Nicol believes someone like Coutinho could make the difference in the race against Manchester City.

"Philippe Coutinho could play where he played when he left which is part of the front three but he also did a stint in the middle three as well," Nicol told ESPN FC.

"He's already shown in the Premier League that he can work on both these positions. What you're trying to do constantly is bring in players that not only make your squad better but make everybody in your starting eleven better.

"Of course, to have the quality of him, he's now pushing somebody like [Sadio] Mane or [Mohamed] Salah on the other side.

"You're just talking about making Liverpool better. That's what's going to be Liverpool's problem. How do they make the squad, first of all, but even the starting eleven even better?

"One of the reasons why I think City did Liverpool last year was because they had more goalscorers. Now you're adding a goalscorer in Coutinho. That could be that one-point difference."
