Jurgen Klopp identifies moment that changed game as Liverpool crash to defeat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has identified the moment that contributed to their Champions League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The visitors ran out 3-2 winners at Anfield after extra-time, triumphing 4-2 on aggregate, to progress to the quarter-finals.

It was their first European home defeat under Klopp as the holders failed to progress from a two-legged tie in European competition under the German for the first time.

The Reds had 34 shots with 11 of those on goal and the boss feels their wastefulness is what led to the loss.

He said: "I'm super proud of the boys because for 95 minutes we played a sensational game.

“Our big mistake was to score the second goal five minutes too late, we should have scored that in the 90 minutes and it would have been fine.

“We were the clear better side, dominated the team which is packed with world class players difficult to break down but we did it constantly.”

Goalkeeper Adrian, who deputised for the injured Alisson, was badly at fault for Atletico’s first goal.

However, Klopp refused to blame the stand-in for the mistake.

He added: “We conceded the goals we conceded. They were game changers. The moment they score they have the momentum.

“If you lose, you lose for some reason. The first goal is pretty obvious but come on Adrian has saved us so many times since he's here.

“He makes the wrong decision that's clear but that's how football is and nothing to blame.

“I feel proud. I told them already they should be proud. The last two and a half years in the Champions League has been an incredible ride and journey.

“In some moments we needed luck or a really good hand and we didn't have that tonight.

“The crowd tonight 'wow'. You see what you need to beat us here, you need luck and a bit of help from us. The performance for 90 minutes was incredible.

“Who cares now? We lost it.”
