Jurgen Klopp hits out at 'bulls**t' comments on Liverpool and Manchester City title race

Jurgen Klopp has called out the “bulls**t” surrounding the title race and vowed to keep on ignoring Manchester City as he set Liverpool a 97-point target.

The Reds moved back to the top of the Premier League table with a hard-earned 2-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, City had momentarily gone clear with a 3-1 triumph at Crystal Palace.

Liverpool have 85 points after 34 games, just one point fewer than their best-ever tally for an entire Premier League season. City are two points adrift with a game in hand.

And when asked if Liverpool had taken note of City's result earlier in the day, Klopp said: “The biggest challenge for us is always facing the world outside, you and other people. We don’t think like that. We play our game.

“If City lose today, and we find out five minutes before the game, somebody tells us ‘City lost!’ but that’s not a help. You lose your focus then.

“We only try to collect as many points as possible. What is it now, 85? Four games to play. 97. Let’s try.

“And if that’s enough, then perfect. If not, we cannot change it. And we didn’t lose it here or there or whatever.

“Very smart people will come out and say ‘yeah, if you would have won against Leicester you would be champions’. It’s all bulls**t. People and idiots bring something like this up.

“I’m so proud of what the boys did today. I loved, loved, loved the atmosphere, it was outstanding. Let us try and do that seven more times and see what we get for it.”

Liverpool are next in action on Wednesday when they are in Porto aiming to defend a 2-0 Champions League quarter-final lead from last week's first leg.

“We see it game by game,” added Klopp. “We go to Porto now, which will be a tough one.

“We know that they get at least two players back, Pepe and Herrera, so they will be an interesting and difficult challenge. Then we play Cardiff, and everybody knows that is a tough place to go.”

The Liverpool boss also felt compelled to comment on a late slip during the game by Andy Robertson, echoing the fall by Steven Gerrard in this fixture five years ago that proved costly in the Reds' last title challenge.

“We can finally close the slipping book,” said Klopp. “Robbo slipped and nothing happened, so it’s not a Liverpool thing. Done.”
