Jurgen Klopp highlights "problem" for Liverpool youngsters as they target Reds first team action

Jurgen Klopp has had to turn to his youth ranks like never before this season as he battles a lengthy injury list but concedes they do not have an easy task.

The likes of Neco Williams, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have all been given far more opportunities than they could've hoped for at the start of the campaign.

Curtis Jones has been the most successful of Liverpool's current crop of academy graduates.

But even he has had to bide his time in a team that is overflowing with quality.

Klopp's youngsters have had to fill in for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago who have all faced time out.

But the German admits they will always be compared to the "world class" individuals who they are coming in for which makes their job that much harder.

"If someone is a Liverpool youth or academy player they already have a lot of talent otherwise they couldn't make the cut," he said.

"They go through all these difficult moments in their youth career and you are already used to some difficult situations and some pressure.

"But when you make the final step and play in a competitive game for the first team that is a different animal and I think the boys adapted really well.

"They did a lot of really good stuff, helped us, and especially in this moment.

"The only problem they have from time to time is people compare the to the guy who played the position before them - in our case world-class players - and that makes it difficult for people to see clearly how talented these boys are.

"But from my point of view they did really well."

Klopp may again turn to the likes of Williams and Phillips for tonight's Champions League clash against Ajax.

The former has been deputising for Alexander-Arnold and is highly thought of.

Phillips meanwhile has already played in Europe having started successive game at the heart of defence against Atalanta.
