Jurgen Klopp has already told Arsenal why they should complete £72m transfer amid Edu 'interest'

Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez, according to recent reports.

The Gunners were heavily linked to the Argentine international during the course of the summer, with local rivals Tottenham Hotspur also said to be keen, although he eventually opted to stay at the San Siro after fellow-frontman Romelu Lukaku joined Chelsea.

Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato have reported that the north Londoners are still interested in Martinez, who could reportedly leave Simone Inzaghi's side at the end of the current campaign.

The 24-year-old, who is valued at £72million on Transfermarkt, has notched 11 goals and two assists in Serie A this season as Inter currently sit second in the league table, just one point behind AC Milan, who have played one more game than their arch-rivals.

Bringing Martinez to the Emirates Stadium would be a huge coup for technical director Edu, with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp previously claiming that the young striker was one of the best in the world.

Speaking to the club's official website last month about the Nerazzurri's strengths, Klopp said: "Obviously Sanchez and Dzeko we know well - and Lautaro Martinez is one of the most exciting strikers in the world, probably.

"It's a proper Champions League tie, so all good and I am absolutely looking forward to it."

The Gunners are definitely in need of a top-class frontman in Martinez's ilk after allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Barcelona last month whilst Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette are both into the final five months of their contracts in north London.
