Jurgen Klopp hails Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool defender completes remarkable double

Jurgen Klopp paid tribute to "special" Virgil van Dijk as the Liverpool defender completed a full season at Newcastle on Sunday.

Van Dijk played the full match at St James' Park for his 38th Premier League appearance of the campaign as the Reds beat their hosts 3-1 to end the season on 99 points.

For the second season running, Van Dijk helped Liverpool record the best defensive record in the top flight with just 33 goals conceded across the entire year of action in the Premier League.

Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have all, at various points this term, played as a first-choice centre-half but Van Dijk has played a part in every match as Liverpool ended a 30-year wait for the league title.

Asked about Liverpool's £75m man, Klopp laughed: "I am not sure if he needs another hour of praise but he is pretty good! He is a good centre-half.

"Yes, he is special, his combination of skills is absolutely special. His mindset on top of that is pretty special, so this mix makes him a pretty good centre-half and a good guy as well, which I like a lot.

"Because we work together and he could be a little bit more difficult to deal with but he's really low maintenance in that case.

"He's just nice to have. We knew when we signed him we were getting a really good player but the package is so special. That makes it really exciting.

"He takes his breaks in the games from time to time which drives me crazy, obviously. I get it, it is pretty special and that was his big target once he knew that he could get it.

"Hopefully, touch wood, that would be possible for the rest of his career. We tried to rest him and it was difficult.

"So far it is gone so well. Hopefully it stays like but he has two weeks off now and he doesn't need more I am sure."
