Jurgen Klopp hails impact of two Liverpool players after win against Leicester

Jurgen Klopp praised the impact of James Milner and Dejan Lovren after Liverpool extended their 100% start to the Premier League season.

Milner struck a dramatic injury-time penalty to earn the Reds a 2-1 win over Leicester City at Anfield on Saturday.

Sadio Mane was sent clear by Milner's excellent pass to open the scoring five minutes before half-time, only for James Maddison to equalise with 10 minutes remaining.

Milner was skipper for the game having replaced club captain Jordan Henderson in the starting line-up.

And Klopp said: “I have already said all the positive things about James Milner, but I have no problem doing it again!

“Not only today but in general, how incredibly important he is. Not even Milly can play 12 games in a row or whatever, it's just too demanding. We just have to make sure they are in the right shape (for when they come in).

“It was a very good performance. The pass for the first goal is just smart. You need to have a few games in your legs to know the situation. We played a few smart passes.

“Evans played a really, really good game but speed-wise he cannot deal with Sadio. And if you can see that and pass the ball, then that's just smart from Millie.

“That's what makes Millie really special because he is obviously prepared for a game, not just physically.”

A 17th successive Premier League has moved leaders Liverpool eight points clear of Manchester City, who are at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow.

Milner's decisive penalty came after Mane was caught by Leicester substitute Marc Albrighton having chased down a pass to goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, VAR confirming the award.

And of Mane's attitude in pursuing what appeared a lost cause, Klopp added: “Absolutely exceptional. Div(ock Origi) came on and Sadio was still there in a really tough game to make this kind of run. We are there, in and around the situations.

“We had the penalty situation which is a penalty. You need someone who can keep his nerve and Millie is the right guy for that, after an impressive performance from him anyway.”

Liverpool's other change saw Lovren introduced for his first Premier League start since May in place of Joe Gomez, with Joel Matip still injured.

And Klopp believes the Croatian and centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk deserve credit for the manner in which they defended a dangerous Leicester attack.

“Some people asked me (after the game) about our defending and said it was not that good, but I have never see a team defend Jamie Vardy better than today,” said the Liverpool boss.

“Apart from the situation in the second half when it was a long ball (for Vardy) and Dejan couldn't quite get there quick enough, I didn’t see that. Dejan (Lovren) and Virgil did well.

“A lot of good things lead to a result. I don’t see where we needed too much luck because it was a penalty and I don't think Leicester had that many other chances to score. We don’t think we will win all football games.”
