Jurgen Klopp gives verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo incident in Liverpool FC win over Manchester United

Jurgen Klopp has played down the suggestion Cristiano Ronaldo should have been sent off during Manchester United's defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.

United lost 5-0 to their fierce rivals on Sunday afternoon as pressure intensifies on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after only one win in the last five Premier League matches.

Solskjaer's side went into half-time four goals down at Old Trafford but could have also gone in a man down when star striker Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in a controversial incident before the break.

The Portuguese ace controversially escaped a red card in first-half stoppage time when he lost possession to Curtis Jones before lashing out at the youngster in frustration, before then making another swipe for the ball as the Liverpool midfielder laid on the floor.

It proved to be a flash point in the match as Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk remonstrated with the referee before players from both sides piled in to calm down the heated situation.

Speaking after the match Klopp was asked whether or not he thought Anthony Taylor should have sent Ronaldo off but chose to diffuse the situation.

“I saw it of course," he told reporters after the match. "For me it looked like it (a red) but in the end I got told it wasn’t because he made contact with the ball.

“I don’t want Cristiano getting a red card. I got convinced, or told at least it was fine.”
