Jurgen Klopp gives verdict on controversial Manchester United goal vs Liverpool FC

Jurgen Klopp said the use of VAR "doesn't make sense" after seeing Manchester United's controversial opening goal against Liverpool at Old Trafford allowed to stand.

Marcus Rashford turned home Daniel James' cross to give United a first-half lead, but Liverpool felt that Divock Origi was fouled by Victor Lindelof in the build-up.

The Liverpool players and Klopp's bench were furious at Martin Atkinson's failure to give a free-kick, but when Atkinson signalled VAR was taking a look Klopp was so convinced it would be overruled he told his coaches to calm down.

But VAR allowed the goal to stand and Klopp said Atkinson's failure to give a free-kick for an obvious foul, believing VAR would overturn it, showed a failure in the process of the system.

"The ref let the game run because he had VAR, but the VAR said it was not clear, so he could say it was not a foul so I don’t overrule it. It doesn't make sense," the Liverpool boss said.

"I calmed everybody down because I saw immediately. Mr Atkinson, he saw it could be a goal and he immediately [signalled] VAR. I said to the coaches they were checking, I was 100% sure VAR would overrule it.

"It’s a clear VAR issue in how we deal with it. I’m not angry. I saw it clear, it was a foul. In England you sometimes say it’s proper football. I’m sure with no VAR Mr Atkinson would give it, but now somebody else [can make] the decision he lets it go but nobody makes the decision."

Klopp said it was a similar issue to the failure to award Manchester City a penalty against Crystal Palace on Saturday night, suggesting the terminology of a "clear and obvious" mistake needed to be looked at.

"Like the Man City penalty, it’a 100% a penalty. They sit in the studio and see it," Klopp said.
