Jurgen Klopp gives thoughts on Deadline Day signing for Liverpool after fresh injury blow

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool should "not close the door completely" on the idea of a deadline day transfer as the Reds need for another midfielder grows.

Club captain Jordan Henderson picked up a hamstring injury during Liverpool's dramatic, last-gasp 2-1 home win over Newcastle when the Reds were already staring down the barrel of a midfield injury crisis. The opening exchanges of Liverpool's season have been blighted by a number of knocks to key players at a crucial time.

Despite the season only being five games old, midfielders Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all spent time on the treatment table already this term. Henderson is the latest to join that list after he was withdrawn against the Magpies 20 minutes before full-time.

Klopp issued an update on the skipper after the full-time, explaining to BT Sport: "We have another problem with Hendo. He left after feeling his hamstring, that is obviously not helpful."

The injury could not have come at a worse time - just 24 hours before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm on Thursday, September 1st. This leaves Klopp with very little time to try and prowl the market for his potential replacement.

While the Reds boss admitted he "doesn't think" Liverpool will make any more additions before the deadline, he refused to rule it out entirely while there is still time for the landscape to change entirely amid reports the club inquired about RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimer.

"I don’t think so," Klopp said on a possible move for a midfielder. "But as long as there’s time we should not close the door completely. Obviously Hendo’s hamstring [injury] is not helpful."

The German was pressed for comment on the severity of Henderson's injury considering this is the start of an intense fixture period for Liverpool with the Champions League group stages just around the corner as well as Saturday's Merseyside derby against Everton.

However, Klopp kept his cards close to his chest as he replied: "That serious that he couldn’t carry on." Whether it is that serious that Liverpool U-turn on their original transfer plans and sign a new midfielder remains to be seen.

Following Fabio Carvalho's late winner over Newcastle, the Reds now sit fifth in the Premier League table. They find themselves five points adrift of long-time title rivals Manchester City and seven points behind current league leaders Arsenal.
