Jurgen Klopp facing Takumi Minamino conundrum as Liverpool ponder midfield overhaul

Liverpool ended their preparations for the Premier League season with a lively encounter against Blackpool at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds came from 2-0 down to eventually triumph 7-2 against a side helmed by their former under-23 boss Neil Critchley.

The new champions begin their defence of their crown when they entertain promoted Leeds United on Saturday evening.

Jurgen Klopp will now consider his options while keeping fingers crossed those on international duty return free from injury.

And here we look ahead to the changes the Reds boss could make when his side are next in action.

Matip stakes claim

Klopp will have been relieved to see Joel Matip come through the Anfield clash on Saturday, scoring a header during a solid display after more than two months out.

The Cameroonian is presently the only senior centre-back option to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are both on international duty.

Neco Williams, who netted a late winner for Wales against Bulgaria on Sunday, has filled in at right-back in recent weeks but Trent Alexander-Arnold was fit enough to come on for England in their UEFA Nations League win in Iceland on Saturday.

The likely unavailability of Kostas Tsimikas only cements further Andy Robertson's starting role on the opposite side of defence.

Middle ground up for grabs

The visit of Leeds could come too soon for skipper Jordan Henderson, who wasn't quite ready for the friendly against Blackpool over the weekend.

Fabinho seems a cert, but otherwise the make-up of the engine room will surely be given considerable thought by Klopp.

Gini Wijnaldum remains in favour despite being in the last year of his deal amid growing speculation of interest from Barcelona, while James Milner will be desperate to feature against his boyhood club.

Naby Keita continues to impress after lockdown while Curtis Jones has staked his claim strongly during pre-season.

And a switch in formation, as seen against the Tangerines on Saturday, could see Takumi Minamino in a central role.

Origi returns

Minamino has shone in particular when used on the left flank, a position in which he featured predominantly when emerging from the bench and scoring during the Community Shield against Arsenal.

But while Divock Origi made a welcome goalscoring return against Blackpool, it would be a surprise if Klopp overly tinkered with the regular front three.

Instead, of particular intrigue will be which players fail to make the squad altogether, with the Premier League reverting to a seven-man bench once again.
