Jurgen Klopp explanation tells what will really happen next for Sadio Mane and Liverpool

James Milner left the pitch in a huff.

He exchanged words with Jurgen Klopp as he was substituted. Moments later he was laughing sheepishly after Curtis Jones came on in his place and provided an assist against West Ham.

Jordan Henderson was an angry man.

He stormed off the pitch past his manager, ignoring him and instead clapping the fans in the away end. Since that moment in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford he has lifted the European Cup and Premier League trophy with Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah could not hide his feelings.

He was taken off early against Chelsea as the Reds slipped to defeat back in March. The Egyptian star is still at the top of the scoring charts and intent on reaching the Champions League spots.

Which brings us to Sadio Mane.

The forward was benched for Liverpool's 4-2 victory over Manchester United on Thursday.

He came on only for a late cameo to help the Reds seal a much-needed win.

After the final whistle, Mane appeared to shun Klopp as the boss was seeking him out for a celebratory handshake.

Much has already been said and written about the incident.

Eyebrows were raised by Sky Sports pundits as Roy Keane said Mane was "out of order" and Graeme Souness branded his actions "disrespectful to the manager and the club".

There is clearly some truth in those perspectives and ignoring Klopp in front of the cameras is far from ideal.

But the German's comments in his post-match press conference told the real story.

Klopp shrugged it off as he revealed the source of Mane's anger.

He explained last night: "I made a late decision in training, really late and changed Diogo [Jota] for Sadio.

"And the players are used to that, I explain that, but I didn't do that properly or whatever.

"In that moment for a Premier League game, Sadio was obviously not too happy, that is all.

"The boys are used to me explaining but there was no time for that, that's the situation. All fine."

And today he added: "Football is an emotional game and people expect that we control our emotions always but it doesn't work out that way.

"If somebody shows me five million times respect and one time not, what is more important?

"We will talk about it and everything will be fine."

Just as all was fine for Milner, Henderson and Salah.

And countless others who have no doubt briefly questioned the wisdom of a Klopp call.

In fact, as the boss reflects even further, it would be no surprise to see a trademark smile spread across his face.

Mane himself admitted earlier this week that he was in the midst of the "worst season of his career".

Rather than shy away and search for answers, the player is clearly desperate to stay on the pitch and put it right.

Given he was on the scoresheet with a strong performance against Southampton at the weekend, he had every right to want to build on the momentum.

That hunger and desire from Mane bodes well for what Liverpool may be capable of next term.

And it could have a more immediate benefit.

When Gini Wijnaldum was left out of the starting line-up for the famous triumph over Barcelona back in 2019, he channelled his bitter disappointment into two vital goals.

As the Dutchman admitted: "I was really angry at the manager that he put me on the bench! I had to do something when I came in, I had to help the team."

In a similar sense, the Senegal star will now be rested and frustrated in equal measure.

And Klopp will hope to have unlocked an extra dimension from him for the final three league games.

Mane may still be struggling to fathom why his form has dropped off during this campaign.

He is certainly not alone there with plenty of Kopites asking the same thing.

But there is no doubting his fierce determination to change course, do what he does best and fire Liverpool right back into the top four.

If Mane can help secure that, you can bet there will be handshakes all round on May 23rd.
