Jurgen Klopp explains why he changed his mind on Steven Gerrard after six years

Jurgen Klopp says if he could manage any Liverpool player from the past it would be Steven Gerrard.

But admits if he'd been asked six years earlier he would have answered differently.

Klopp was named Liverpool manager the same year club legend Gerrard said goodbye to Anfield after 17 years and joined MLS outfit LA Galaxy for a season.

Klopp only got to see Gerrard in action first-hand during a training match at Liverpool, alongside other former stars Steve McManaman, Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger a few years ago.

But despite the now Rangers boss being past his prime, Klopp was still impressed with what he saw.

Steven Gerrard came back to Liverpool to train alongside Jurgen Klopp when he was at LA Galaxy (Liverpool FC)

And he believes that had he got the chance to manage Gerrard the pair could have set the world alight.

When asked to name the one former Liverpool player he wished he could have coached by This is Anfield, Klopp responded: "That's easy. It's Stevie.

"When we played in Sydney three or four years ago and after the season we didn't have a proper team and we invited McManaman, [Daniel] Agger, Jamie Carragher and Stevie.

"To be honest, I knew Liverpool and I saw him playing, of course, but a little bit advanced age group wise but they were all really good. But Stevie, what a player he still was then! I think he was already retired but maybe a youth coach here. Incredible.

"Stevie and me together in the roles, he as the man on the pitch and me as a coach that would have been nice.

"So it's Stevie. Six years ago it would have been a different answer but now I'm here and I know him as a person and as a player so that's now an easy answer."
