Jurgen Klopp explains Roberto Firmino absence in latest Liverpool injury blow

Jurgen Klopp has explained Firmino’s absence from Liverpool’s Premier League match against Fulham.

The Brazilian frontman was left out of the squad for the Anfield clash, with his manager revealing he and January signing Ozan Kabak were nursing minor injuries.

“Two changes we had to make because of little injuries, with Bobby and Ozan,” Klopp told Sky Sports ahead of the match.

With the Reds also in Champions League action in midweek against RB Leipzig, the German admitted he needs to manage his squad carefully given the hectic fixture schedule.

Liverpool lead the German side 2-0 from the first leg but will be taking nothing for granted, with Klopp keen to name a strong side for the return game at home.

“The others we thought it made absolute sense. We are in an intense period and we have the opportunity now to change some players.”

The reigning Premier League Champions have had a number of injury problems so far this season and have seen their title defence derailed in recent months.

In Firmino’s absence, Xherdan Shaqiri was recalled to the Liverpool frontline alongside Mohamed Salah.

Diogo Jota also made his first start after a three-month layoff, replacing Sadio Mane.

Naby Keita was handed a rare start in midfield.

Klopp also chose to rejig his backline, handing starts to Neco Williams, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips.

“We’ve got at least more sessions in the legs so we thought it feels really well together, so that’s the plan behind it.” he added.

“Getting fresh legs back and try to give Fulham a proper fight.”
