Jurgen Klopp explains how Matip's Liverpool goal vs Leeds was 'reward' for training ground planning

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool’s second goal last night was down to pre-match preparations on Leeds’ defending.

The Reds battered Marcelo Bielsa’s side from start to finish to win 6-0, with goal machines Mo Salah and Sadio Mane unsurprisingly bagging braces.

However, it was Joel Matip’s rare strike to make it 2-0 that was the most eye-catching, when the defender charged towards the Whites’ penalty area and buried past Illan Meslier.

Question marks were raised about the Leeds backline - who have now conceded the most goals in the Premier League - but Klopp insists the move was premeditated.

Speaking to Liverpool Echo after the game, he said: "The way Leeds defend, it gives Joel, especially, on that right side, the chance (to get forward) and it is his duty to step in to make yards.

"And then, in the end, they will always make the block but they have to find a way to keep the game going. He did that this time with the pass outside and he followed it through.

"It's not possible to do that in all games or needed in all games but against Leeds, it is possible and it is needed as well.

"So he did that very well and got the full reward for it, so I am really happy."
