Jurgen Klopp doubts value of European Super League after Liverpool are named in breakaway plans

Jurgen Klopp has questioned the value of a European Super League after reports emerged suggesting a number of clubs, including Liverpool, are plotting a breakaway.

German newspaper Der Spiegel claimed on Friday that documents provided to them by the Football Leaks website prove that the likes of AC Milan, Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich have laid out plans to depart their domestic leagues in order to form a new competition.

Eleven of Europe’s biggest clubs would take part as founders and be immune from relegation for 20 years as a result, while others would be invited to take part as guests.

But Klopp appeared uninterested in the prospect of such a tournament when it was put to him following his side’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday.

He joked: “The first time it sounds really nice because it sounds like much less games and a lot more money!”

The German then added: “I’m completely fine with league football how it is at the moment. [It] is an idea that we don’t do immediately; I’m not even sure if someone actually spoke about it, to be honest.

“It looks like, with all the other wonderful ideas of Fifa and Uefa, they do it immediately, they don’t ask.

“You see, ‘ah, now we have 20 games more and not more money’.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Unai Emery remained non-committal on the suggestions, saying: "Maybe it’s a bigger, deeper decision that needs more time."
