Jurgen Klopp discusses starting Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in Liverpool vs Man City

Jurgen Klopp is tempted to throw Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino into action in Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City .

The Liverpool attacking duo both returned to training this week after extended breaks following their international exploits this summer.

Both men, as well as returning goalkeeper Alisson, played their part in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Lyon in Geneva on Wednesday night.

Firmino scored before being substituted after 31 minutes while Salah played the entire first half against the French side.

Both will continue working on their fitness at Liverpool’s current training base in Evian.

And Klopp isn’t ruling out using the pair against the Premier League champions in the season’s traditional curtain-raiser.

Klopp remarked: “I don't know yet at the moment. We have to see.

“I don't say 100 per cent not, but there's a chance they could play. Maybe from the start no, we can't take people off after half an hour!

“We will have to see how they react tomorrow, now training is not about intensity it is about the detail.

“We need to really prepare the game, Man City is different from all other games you play, you have to play a pre-season game against Man City to properly prepare for facing Man City."

Keita is another man to return (2019 Liverpool FC)

Naby Keita - who, like Salah and the still-absent Sadio Mane, played at the Africa Cup of Nations, also returned to the lineup, as did fit-again Xherdan Shaqiri.

That duo also only returned to training in Monday, and asked whether he was surprised about how much some were able to give in Switzerland, Klopp added: “I wasn't surprised really.

“Mo is naturally fit and can sprint all day.

“It opens up the pitch and we can play much more football if you don't always play between the lines and you can from time to time chip the ball in and play. Mo makes these offers and it's important for us.

“Bobby, in between the lines and in the box, pressing, important.

“There were a lot of good performances.

"In the last 30 minutes the boys really looked solid, looked kind of tuned, you could see they'd played together a couple of times. They fitted really well in that formation.”
