Roberto Firmino out with "serious" injury plus double Liverpool blow

Roberto Firmino has been ruled out with hamstring problem as Liverpool's attacking options are cut by one ahead of Sunday's trip to West Ham United.

The Brazilian suffered the setback during the midweek win over Atletico Madrid, with Reds manager Jurgen Klopp describing the injury as "serious" and confirming Firmino will be on the sidelines for a long time.

Klopp also confirmed two of the squad's other injury victims aren't expected to be available until after the international break, with both Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones set to miss the game at the London Stadium.

However, there was some better news in midfield, where Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara both came through unscathed after featuring in the Champions League.

Firmino entered the field as a second-half substitute against Atletico Madrid, as Liverpool sealed their European progress with a 2-0 win, but he was replaced half an hour later when it became clear he could not continue.

“Bobby is not good news with a serious hamstring injury, really unfortunate," Klopp said ahead of the West Ham game.

"Losing Bobby is a blow. We've known now for two days it's a serious injury," the manager revealed.

"We talk about weeks, still. I don't know exactly, but more than four. Then we have to see, he's a quick healer."

Firmino has been an important player for Liverpool this season, both in front of goal and in helping bring his team-mates into play.

The 30-year-old has six goals this term, including a hat-trick in a 5-0 Premier League win at Watford and two goals in Liverpool's 5-1 victory over Porto in the Champions League.

The former Hoffenheim man featured in home and away wins against West Ham last season, but Liverpool will have to do without him as they take on opponents sitting fourth in the Premier League.

Klopp also revealed Jones is recovering from a freak eye injury suffered in training.

“Curtis is a completely different story [to Firmino], he was very unlucky in training – he got a finger that scratched the eye," Klopp said.

Both are expected to return shortly after the international break, though the manager said Liverpool will "have to wait" on Naby Keita and James Milner as the pair continue to work their way back to full fitness after suffering injuries in October's win away to Manchester United.
