Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoke of his pride following the support Reds fans have given to Sean Cox during his recovery from the horrific attack where he sustained life-changing injuries, ahead of a clash against AS Roma in April 2018.
Sean Cox will make his first visit back to Anfield to see this weekend, following the brutal unprovoked attack.
He watched the Reds play in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium when a Liverpool legends XI took on a Republic of Ireland XI in aid of the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust this summer, which raised an estimated £700,000.
Speaking to the press today, Reds boss Klopp said: “When it happened, it was the lowest point for me here at LFC. Because it should not happen in life or football games.
“The love Sean and family have for this club, I hope it has given him strength and power in recovery."
He also spoke of his delight at the fact that Cox is now returning to Anfield following 18 months of rehabilitation and recovery from the injuries he sustained in the attack.
"That we can give him the opportunity that he wants to is now coming from a real low point to one of my highlights," he added.
"How the Liverpool community dealt with this, I hope he feels that. You’ll Never Walk Alone- they sing it and live it. I hope he felt that the whole time. We can help him."
Mr Cox’s wife told Dublin Live earlier this week that the moment will be bittersweet for her and her family, however, she praised Liverpool Football Club for their support over the past 18 months.
"We're getting him there, and that's a really positive thing for him - I think it will be great for him.
"Liverpool have been amazing, and they've really come on board. Obviously they had the [charity] game in the Aviva... so I reckon they'll be pulling out all the stops for Sean.
"It will give him a boost, I think, on Sunday."
She confirmed that Sean’s condition is still improving and that the fundraising that the game at the Aviva Stadium last summer was able to raise has been crucial to his ongoing rehabilitation programme.
"He's on a 12-14 week programme.
"Sean needs a serious amount of rehab, and it's to improve him... for a better quality of life.
"We don't really know the final outcome, how things are going to pan out... but we're there just to make things better for him.
"Unfortunately for Sean, he needs so much more rehab - so that's why we had to reach out and see what we could do.
"Other than that, Sean would just be in a nursing home - and we just weren't having that, so that's why we did all the fundraising."
