Jurgen Klopp defends Alisson but admits Liverpool VAR call difficult to accept

Jurgen Klopp has refused to criticise Alisson Becker after another goalkeeping error cost Liverpool in the 3-1 defeat at Leicester.

And the Reds boss believes the Foxes' equaliser that led to a second-half collapse from the visitors should have been ruled out for offside.

After James Maddison had restored parity following Mohamed Salah's opener, Leicester were able to make it 2-1 when Alisson collided with debutant Ozan Kabak after rushing from his goalline.

A seven-minute capitulation was complete when Harvey Barnes made it 3-1 to send Brendan Rodgers' side six points clear of Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish.

Klopp said the misunderstanding between Kabak and Alisson was indicative of a player who is not yet up to speed with how the champions defend as he absolved the Brazilian goalkeeper of blame for a third error in less than a week.

Kabak was making his first start since arriving on transfer deadline day at the start of the month and believes he will eventually learn how to defend in the Liverpool system given time.

"The misunderstanding we had...we all knew before the game that Ozan is a really good player and after the game we know that as well," Klopp said.

"But we know that he is not really used to all the things we do.

"And when you play with Ali, you know that he is offensive and comes out of his goal. So in this situation, it was a misunderstanding and that can happen.

"When you are new together these things can happen and it is usually pre-season. We don't have that and that is why the second goal happened."

On the first goal, which was given after Daniel Amartey was judged to have been onside from Maddison's fizzed free-kick, Klopp said he disagreed with the decision from the officials.

He added: "The first goal is a strange situation which I think, how I said, should have been offside.

"The majority of the game was really good. I don't think it is easy to dominate Leicester in the way that we did and play the kind of football we played after losing a few days ago (against Manchester City) with a strange scoreline, but the boys did that.

"We scored the first goal, great goal, conceded a strange one and I think it's offside to be honest and the 2-1 is a misunderstanding.

"The 2-1 had too big an impact on the game. There was still maybe 12 or 13 minutes to go and with extra time longer, so we have to show a different reaction.

"But then the third goal we give away is easy and it is simple. Then it is game over."

He added: "If you saw the situation back, everyone on the pitch, on the side of the pitch, even after watching it back, I was sure it was offside.

"Accepting something like this with a smile and just [saying] 'oh yes, OK, it might be a mistake' is not easy.

"We worked really hard to be 1-0 up and it's gone with a really tough decision. Especially for Ali it is a tough decision because he can see three players in front of him and he is 100 per cent sure it is offside.

"The 2-1 can happen but when we conceded it at 2-1 and the manner of the response to the knock, I didn't like."
