Jurgen Klopp cracks Manchester joke as Liverpool named Team of the Year at BBC SPOTY awards

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp cracked a joke about Manchester as his side were crowned Team of the Year at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The Reds have enjoyed a stellar 2020 as they ended a long wait to lift the Premier League title.

And tonight they were honoured at a special ceremony at the BBC's base in Media City - located in Salford, Greater Manchester.

As Jordan Henderson and Klopp came out to accept the award, the boss could not resist a little dig at rivals along the M62.

He said: "Getting this prize in Manchester by the way makes it even sweeter!"

Before that, Klopp said: "First and foremost I have to say, each team I saw now in the short summary would have absolutely deserved it.

"But I think my team deserves it. They did an incredible job. It's a mix of talent, character, desire and the power of the club which is really a big one.

"That all comes together and we become champions. It was a great moment to be honest."

The German then sent a message to fans about celebrations in the future, adding: "We can wait for them! We do what we can to bridge the time until they are back again.

"We said it before - we want to organise a big, big party in the moment that it is allowed again.

"It looks like it will take a little while still. We will see - maybe we can win something [before] then and we have two things to celebrate!

"But if not, the one thing we won last year we will celebrate for sure. We can't wait to see you again."

Klopp was asked to stay on stage - because he was shortly also named Coach of the Year.

Reacting to that honour, he paid tribute to his staff and said: "My coaching team is obviously the main reason why all the things work the way they work.

"It's really nice. On behalf of my coaches I accept it - and take it home to Liverpool. Thank you very much."

Before the start of this evening's show, Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton had been favourite to win this year's main Sports Personality award.

And the bookies were proved right, as he scooped top spot with Henderson in second and jockey Hollie Doyle in third.
