Jurgen Klopp confirms Xherdan Shaqiri will be out "for a while" after suffering calf tear

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Xherdan Shaqiri will not be involved "for a while" after tearing his calf while on Switzerland duty at the UEFA Nations League.

Shaqiri returned to Melwood for pre-season on Monday and was assessed by the Reds' medical staff after playing both games in the tournament against Portugal and England.

But Klopp has revealed that he faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the campaign.

"Shaq is still injured from the national team and it will take a while until he is in again," Klopp told the club's website .

The 27-year-old played a crucial role for Liverpool over the course of last season as the Reds finished second in the Premier League and claimed their sixth European crown.

He arrived for just £13million from relegated Stoke and went on to feature 30 times, scoring six goals.

Shaqiri made a key contribution in the semi-final second leg against Barcelona as Klopp's side came from 3-0 down on aggregate to beat the Catalan giants 4-0 at Anfield and book a place in the final against Tottenham in Madrid.
