Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool FC injury blow ahead of Manchester United fixture

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that centre-back Joe Gomez will miss Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Anfield through injury.

The England international, 25, has missed both of the last two matches with a muscle problem. He suffered the blow during last month's 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Gomez has been a regular fixture for the Merseyside outfit this season, racking up 29 appearances in all competitions. Liverpool have strength in depth at centre-back and have recorded back-to-back clean sheets in their last two outings since that drubbing at the hands of Madrid.

Ahead of the clash with Erik ten Hag's side, Klopp revealed that Gomez is "not close enough" to be reintroduced to the squad just yet.

"Physically we should be fine, mentally fine, so yes, nothing to moan about," said Klopp, as quoted by the Liverpool ECHO. "Yesterday evening they were all fine. Joe Gomez is closer, not close enough."

Elsewhere, Liverpool will once again be without Thiago and Luis Diaz. The former has been sidelined since suffering a hip injury last month and Diaz has not featured since October because of a knee problem.

Klopp's troops will be gunning for revenge after their 2-1 defeat to United at Old Trafford back in August. It is a fixture that means so much to both clubs and the German is fully aware of the emotions that come with it.

"You need emotions but all your other skills as well," he added. "I am always looking forward to this game. It's the game. It's massive.

"Last few years we did quite well. They are having a much better season than us but it means nothing."
