Jurgen Klopp confirms holiday plan for Liverpool squad as season ends

Liverpool’s players will have a two-week break after ending their champion Premier League season in record-breaking fashion.

The Reds finished the campaign on a club-record 99 points after coming from behind to beat Newcastle United 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Virgil van Dijk, Divock Origi and substitute Sadio Mane all scored after Dwight Gayle had put the home side ahead after only 24 seconds.

The victory meant Liverpool surpassed last season’s tally of 97 and ended just a point short of Manchester City’s all-time record of 100.

And the Reds will now be given two weeks’ holiday before preparations begin for the new Premier League campaign, which starts on the weekend of September 12.

“We will have two weeks off, the boys will be off completely with no ball, nothing,” said Klopp.

“The lockdown was for the boys really intense from a mental point of view.

“These boys had to keep their fitness levels for every possible return date. When we went into lockdown in March I think the first possible date for a return was April 4. It was discussed and we had to make sure we are ready then.

“Okay, it didn’t happen. And that whole period was really intense for the boys.

“Now it’s two weeks off. Then somebody will tell us when the new season starts and we have to deal with the time that we have.

“A lot of teams are still playing with the Champions League and Europa League, which is really tough. We have now got two weeks off and we will use that, 100%.

"I’m having time off as well!”
