Jurgen Klopp concedes Virgil van Dijk decision "not down to me" despite injury fears

Jurgen Klopp has conceded it's not up to him whether Virgil van Dijk plays for Holland at the Euros.

He added the same is true for Jordan Henderson, admitting: "If they're ready, they're ready."

Van Dijk has missed the majority of this season after he ruptured his ACL during the Merseyside derby back in October 2020.

The centre-back has had surgery on his knee and has returned to light training by himself at the Reds' Kirkby complex.

Van Dijk is not expected to be fit to play for Liverpool again before the end of the campaign, and Reds chiefs would prefer that the defender give the Euros a miss and focus on completing a pre-season at Anfield.

But Klopp admits the decision isn't in his hands, and if Van Dijk and Henderson want to play for their countries then he can't stand in their way.

"I have no idea about the Euros. Nothing has changed. They are where they should be at the moment," said Klopp at a press conference on Friday.

"I don't want to take a player away from England or Holland, if they're ready, they're ready. It's not down to me to make these decisions."

Henderson recently underwent groin surgery after picking up an injury in the Merseyside derby in February.

On the Liverpool captain's progress, Klopp added: "He is not here - he can't train but he will train in the next days and weeks for sure.

"Nothing to say from me. I am not a doctor - it's about time - will it be enough? No idea."
