Jurgen Klopp calls on Premier League to do more to help English teams in Europe

Jurgen Klopp has complained about a perceived lack of aid from the Premier League ahead of European fixtures, and believes they should follow the lead of the Dutch league in helping English sides.

The Eredivisie decided to postpone a whole round of weekend fixtures for two and a half weeks in order to help Ajax ahead of their clash with Tottenham .

Although Klopp admitted he was surprised at the lengths the Dutch authorities went to to give Ajax an advantage, he said the Premier League could definitely do more in order to allow domestic sides to be fresher for the European tournaments.

How Man City's win over Tottenham has affected the Premier League top-four race

Speaking at his press conference Klopp said: “The Dutch league had a problem because for the last two match days, everyone plays at the same time.

“We would have thought they’d change [the Dutch fixtures] to the Saturday but they didn’t do that, I don’t know why.

“Would something like that happen in England? No, I don’t think it would happen here or in Germany, to be 100 per cent honest.

“I think the Premier League should support teams. We now have four teams in the semi-finals in Europe and that is a big number.”

Klopp also urged his side to not get distracted by the prospect of their upcoming games against Barcelona , with Liverpool still a point behind Manchester City and locked in a thrilling battle for the Premier League title.

“A lot of people at the moment, when they think about Liverpool, they immediately think about Barcelona," he said.

"But before Barcelona it’s Cardiff and Huddersfield , and that’s of exactly the same importance as the other game after that.”

The Reds managed to avoid any fresh injuries during their win against Porto during the week, and Joe Gomez could start against Cardiff having returned from a broken leg to make an appearance from the bench.
