Jurgen Klopp called a "numpty" following Premier League fixture complaints

Jurgen Klopp has been labelled a "numpty" for his views on the Premier League fixture list over the festive period after bemoaning the physical toll it takes on players.

The Liverpool boss has often criticised the amount of games his side are forced to play around this time of year, particularly the period between Boxing Day and the New Year.

Though the majority of other major European leagues pause their season and allow players to take a break over Christmas, Boxing Day fixtures have long been a tradition in English football.

Klopp's sentiments have been echoed by his Reds captain Jordan Henderson, who shares the same concern over player welfare, while Pep Guardiola, manager of title rivals Manchester City has suggested players go on strike in a bid to get the Premier League to take action.

However, not everyone is in agreement, with talkSPORT pundits Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist suggesting Klopp has the best-suited squad to deal with a lot of games in a short period of time.

Brazil explained: "The word you are missing Jurgen is 'tradition'. Stop changing it you numpty!

"With the benefits of the squad he's got and the size he's got... for God's sake."

McCoist agreed, claiming: "I know what he's saying, but we've been doing it for years. It is part and parcel of British footballing culture. That's what we do. Just get on with it!

"I know he wants another 24 hours and his physio and medical staff will be saying stuff, of course they will. But he's better off than anybody else, in terms of the squad he's got.

"I can understand what he's saying. However, you can't beat a bit of tradition.

"The old British football over the festive period. Games flying at us left, right and centre. You can't beat it."

Ironically, Klopp is one of the few managers that won't have to take charge of his side on Boxing Day after Liverpool's home clash with Leeds United was postponed due to a rising number of Covid-19 cases within the Leeds camp.

As things stand, the only other Boxing Day fixture that has also been postponed is Watford's trip to Wolves, the Hornets registering a number of positive cases.

As a result, Liverpool's next Premier League fixture comes in the form of a visit to the King Power to take on Brendan Rodgers' Leicester City side.

That contest takes place on December 28, meaning Klopp's men will have had a six day rest from their last fixture, also against the Foxes in the Carabao Cup on December 22.
